Wilson Reading System®

Wilson Reading System® is a highly-structured remedial program that directly teaches the structure of the language to students and adults who have been unable to learn with other teaching strategies, or who may require multisensory language instruction.

• Provides a systematic and cumulative approach to teach total word structure for decoding and encoding.

• Addresses decoding, encoding, oral reading fluency, and comprehension in a sensible and logical fashion

• All instruction is multisensory and interactive.

• Uses a unique “sound tapping” system.

• Is a comprehensive program that follows students from grade to grade.

• There are 12 books that each contain substeps. Students must master the skills in each substep and book to move to the next step of the program.

What are the parts of a WILSON Lesson?

  1. Sequential decoding of words through tapping and sound instruction.

  2. Reading words, sentences and passages that contain the taught patterns.

  3. Sequential encoding (spelling) of words through tapping nad sound instruction.

  4. Spelling words, writing dicated sentences correctly.

How can families help at home?

  1. When students are reading use tapping and blending strategies to read.

  2. Allow students to use their finger or a pencil to promote fluency while they are reading.

  3. Allow students to read silently before reading aloud.

  4. Visualize what you are reading together.
