The Carlisle Area School Board of Directors recognized 5th grade students from Mt. Holly Springs Elementary School, along with their 4th grade teacher Ms. Drivas, in their efforts to research, purchase and install a Little Free Library for the Mt. Holly Springs Community.
The project developed following a book reading on “Little Libraries, Big Dreams” and an activity which referenced opportunities to ‘better our community’. The students posed the question “Why wouldn’t a community want a Little Free Library?”. The reasons they shared included an opportunity for everyone to learn, no cost to access, they - the students could develop rules and guidelines, it would be an honor to the community, and it would bring people together.
The students obtained Mt. Holly Springs Borough permission, conducted fundraising, and composed a letter to Carlisle High School teacher Mr. Sean Allewelt to ask for the Carpentry students’ help to build the little library. The students learned valuable lessons of gratitude for people they knew, and many they didn’t know, who provided donations and helped construct.
The Little Free Library is situated along the Borough’s walking trail and is thriving with a great collection of books.
