Public Health Concern Notification: March 3, 2020

March 3, 2020

Dear Carlisle Area School District Families,

Whenever public health concerns arise, such as the current emergence of the coronavirus (COVID-19), schools are often asked if special measures are needed. We both understand and appreciate these questions and concerns.

Our District’s response to public health concerns is based on guidance or directives issued from public health and governmental agencies. As of the issuance of this communication, those agencies have not recommended that schools implement any special measures.

With that said, the District seeks to be proactive in ensuring the health and well-being of our school community. The Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention offer these everyday preventive actions to help minimize the spread of flu-like illnesses.

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with your hands.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
  • Stay home when you are sick until you are fever free for a minimum of 24 hours, without the use of fever-reducing medicine.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

For your information, the below items are part of Carlisle’s routine practices.

  • Custodians wipe down and disinfect desks and doorknobs daily.
  • Our principals monitor absentee rates.
  • Our school nurses monitor visits to school nurses.
  • Our school nurses encourage sick students and staff to stay home until fever free.

Please know that we are watching for developments and guidance from the appropriate agencies and will keep you updated. We encourage you to view the resource links that we have posted under the District News section of our website at www.carlisleschools.org.
